The Cathedral

Dom St. Martin, also called Mainz Cathedral, is an amazing cathedral in the center of Mainz. This impressive structure has left its mark on the city's history. Constructed of red-colored sandstone, the pillared basilica contrasts with the striking light stones of the Romanesque Gotthardkapelle. The interior of the cathedral houses important cultural-historical treasures and funerary monuments from the 13th to 18th centuries.

Isis & Mater Magna Heiligtum

In the year 2000, a temple dedicated to the ancient Egyptian deity Isis and the oriental Mater Magna was discovered in Mainz, which was probably in use until the 3rd century. In addition to over 300 oil lamps found here, particularly noteworthy are the excavated offerings such as dates, figs, pine nuts and grains, which were burned on altars. As evidenced by the many chicken bones also found here, animals were also sacrificed.

In the old center of Mainz lies the Market Square. The market square with its thousand-year-old cathedral, historic Renaissance facades and half-timbered houses also provides a wonderful backdrop for one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.
